What is IF, you ask? Interplanetary Fuckery? Insane Fingering? What kind of kinky acronym is that?
No, my friends, it’s Intermittent Fasting. It’s an ancient concept for health and fitness that has seen a major rebirth the last few years. It’s allowed me to drop 30lbs over the last few months. And, it’s insanely easy to do.
The basic concept is you just don’t eat for a 16-20 hour window during the day, perhaps 2-4 times a week, depending on your goals. Women generally are advised to fast fewer hours than men. So if a man sets out to go 20, women should be thinking 16.
For me, and that’s a huge statement, 20-22 hours is the sweet spot. I don’t train with weights on days I am fasting but I will mix in some cardio. I know people that will last eat at 8pm and not eat again till 4pm next day. That works for them. I have a harder time with that. I will eat breakfast 6am and maybe a bit of protein around 9-10am then don’t eat again until 6am the next day. This is easier for me to follow as the last few hours of the fast, I’m asleep.
“But wait, Sir Tex, I know that if you don’t eat your body goes into starvation mode and tries to store as much fat as possible!”
You’ve been brainwashed to believe this. And if you go 100 hours plus, then this is a true statement. No one doing IF, outside a hospital setting, does more than 36 hours that I’ve read. So dismiss that concern. Is it for everyone? Well, no. Check with your doctor. I’d imagine if you’re a Type 1 diabetic, this is not going to work for you.
There is a great 1 Hour documentary on Amazon Prime called “The Science of Fasting”. It’s a european hospital that uses fasting to treat cancer and other life ending diseases and they are getting amazing results. This is a hospital setting and patients get extreme monitoring as their fasts go way out there for several weeks.
This is not just for weight loss. There is a lot of science published that shows that when the body isn’t expending energy digesting food, that energy is put to cellular repair. Also, it allows the bio in your gut to normalize. Lots of science tying gut health to overall health that many of us have ignored for years.
“But, Sir Tex, I’ll get hungry!”
Yes, you will a little. At first. Until your body is conditioned.
Here is what you do. Drink water all day. As soon as you start to feel a pang of hunger, drink some water. It goes away. Intermittent Fasting is 95% mental mind game. But mental is where the other benefits really kick in for me:
Increased confidence, better body image, feelings of power, euphoria, mental clarity and focus to name a few. The mind is so powerful. When you’re not clogging your blood stream with a bunch of junk, the mind can flex its muscle. Near the 12-15 hour mark in my fasts, I get so focused mentally. It’s a state I wish I could be in for more than a few hours.
My mind doesn’t wander. I get to whatever it is I’m doing. I can read a book much more quickly and with greater comprehension.
This is dead stupid easy. How difficult is it to make a great food decision if you’re simply not eating? Oh yeah, once the stubborn fat starts to melt off for the first time EVER, you’ll get hooked.
Men, you want to lead your family? Yet, your beer gut tells them you can’t even lead yourself effectively. Why should they trust you? If that sounds harsh, go eat a Ding Dong and cry to yourself a bit. Then…. No more excuses. Do something. Fix your health. I have walked your current path. If I can do this, so can you.
My goal? On December 25th this past year, I swore I would see my abs by Christmas 2018. I’m well on my way. I will own up to my goal then with before and after photos.
